The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes

It wasn't an illusion. This book was short yet it was one of the sweetest and the saddest ones I've read. For me, it was the style that truly moved me. Certain words and the tone that was used. The narrative looked through what I was feeling and it directly confirmed what I was thinking; I hope you are following me.

Go over all of this in detail with Tony Webster, the protagonist. I had to use the dictionary several times to get through the book, and that means that Barnes's diction is pretty old-fashioned and specific.



Here are some excerpts from the book worth typing out (according to me anyways, haha):

pg 10 -- Yes, of course we were pretentious – what else is youth for? We used terms like ‘Weltanschuung’ and ‘Sturm und Drang’, enjoyed saying ‘That’s philosophically self-evident’, and assured one another that the imagination’s first duty was to be transgressive. Our parents saw things differently, picturing their children as innocents suddenly exposed to noxious influence. So Colin’s mother referred to me as his ‘dark angel’; my father blamed Alex when he found me reading The Communist Manifesto; Colin was fingered by Alex’s parents when they caught him with a hard-boiled American crime novel. And so on. It was the same with sex. Our parents thought we might be corrupted by one another into becoming whatever it was they most feared: an incorrigible masturbator, a winsome homosexual, a recklessly impregnatory libertine. On our behalf they dreaded the closeness of adolescent friendship, the predatory behavior of strangers on trains, the lure of the wrong kind of girl. How far their anxieties outran our experience.

Pg 103 – Does character develop over time? In novels, of course it does: otherwise there wouldn’t be much of a story. But in life? I sometimes wonder. Our attitudes and opinions change, we develop new habits and eccentricities; but that’s something different, more like decoration. Perhaps character resembles intelligence, except that character peaks a little later: between twenty and thirty, say. And after that, we’re just stuck with what we’ve got. We’re on our own. If so, that would explain a lot of lives, wouldn’t it? And also – if this isn’t too grand a word – our tragedy.

Daisuke Ueda, signed orginally with Donna Models from Tokyo, is now walking the runways in Milan, New York, and Paris. He does some editorial work here and there, but not too many. Then again, he is quite new into the scene. Let's give him some time to follow up his break, if he doesn't, well. He would just be another model that gave his best shot. Hehe. Height: 6’1" and I just can't get enough of his CHISELED BEAUTIFUL FACE. GUGH.

Marcel Castenmiller

As promised, the new boy post is on Marcel Castenmiller !!!!!!!!!
He's like a Yuri to me; I just can never get enough of this guy. Ranked #16 on Top 50 Male Models, he's going strong and will always be strong. Plus, this guy's Canadian, born and raised in Alberta !! He's not a big of an editorial model like Yuri or Cole, but Marcel RULES the runways. His body is made for clothes and fittings and his strut and unstressed attitude are for fashion weeks.

He goes from dirty trashy to super WTF dirty to say what ? He's prep to normal dudes that are tall, skinny and artsy. Truly versatile. And after checking out Marcel's interviews, he doesn't seem too down to earth and he also seems like an asshole. So I like that-

hey gaaaaiizzzz

Finance done. It gave me an upset stomach, a headache, sleepiness, and bad taste buds. I just want to crash, but I cannot. For I've two more finals tomorrow. Then three more to go after......... Death, ain't it ?

So to survive these few brutal days and to put me into a bit of a downer is the band, Girls. Out from SF, California, Girls debuted back in 2007 but caught most of the attention in 2009 with their first record, Album. I found them via Pitchfork way back when they were showcased on a rooftop for PitchforkTV. They sounded VERY ELVIS COSTELLO and super naive.. Maybe that's why I was never GUNG HO GIRLS !!! YEAH !!!!!

But this naivete is their key point now and I've grown to like it. Past November, 2010, they released an EP, Broken Dreams Club. The six songs on it epitomizes broken dreams and you can feel the brutal honesty. I think its climax point is their track, Substance. I've posted the lyrics below; it's pretty easy to figure out what Chris is talking about. It is beautifully sad, hazy and vain, and pointlessly hopeless. And I go back and forth and back and forth trying to figure out the paths in my life and trying to get closer to Him.

PS. Try finding them on Google. Googling "girls" is hard enough but "girls band" doesn't work and "girls California" doesn't work.. Not even "girls Chet" doesn't work !! Chet as in Chet the vice-captain of the band. Instead Google gives you the search of "girls chest" and yeah, I don't mind titties, but I don't swing that way, okay ? So yeah. It's been a journey-

PPS. The lead singer and guitarist and basically the head honcho of the band, Christopher Owens, was a past member of The Children of God cult. WOOWAOOWAWOWOAHHHHh-

Daniel Landroche

Daniel Landroche made all-stars last year and this was from a Ford booklet thing back in November 2010. I saw him and was like OOMPH. CUTTIIIIEEEE. But the thing is... He isnt really a model; he was scouted after his role as the young teen in Milk, the movie starring Sean Penn. Yeah... IKR !??! But though he made this list and what not....... I don't see him anywhere in runways nor editorials !!! Basically.. um... byebyeeeee, Daniel. It was nice meeting you for few flashes. I love your hair..... Surprisingly, there's a few things that are eating up my time.. other than my history short paper due less than 24 hours. There are three points:

3) I'll be starting to help out with some articles for String Magazine ! Vancouver's online culture magazine. I'm thrilled to be undertaking this project but pretty nervous as well. Hopefully it'd go well all according to the plan..... Haha, I better start collecting those karma points !! EEK !

holiday moments

Just rethinking over the blissful days with my lovely lady, Sam. The holidays of 2010. Never forget the special memories, but dig deep and bury the worst. Love you all.

A holiday gathering. Quinoa salad + homemade hummus. My mother seriously deserves an award. MMmmmmm. I feel like I ate through all my days during the holiday. The after-effects of these days are tremendously horrible. AIIIYAAAAAA !!
