Tobias Wong

Meet Tobias "Tobi" Wong.

On Oct 4th, I was lucky enough to be invited by Nigel to attend an exhibition talk at the Museum of Vancouver. I was a naive little girl, having no idea who this internationally acclaimed artist, Tobias Wong, was, yet entering an intimate circle of his -- friends + family -- at the talk.

I have all sorts of mixed feelings about this night. So I think I will just point form my thoughts.

a) I didn't like how yuppy the crowd was. I didn't like myself for not being as open to talking with any of the people there. I thought that I was someone who really likes "art," including all the pretentious fuckeries and beautiful bullshit phrases that are involved with it. But it wasn't so. And I had many internal conflicts.

b) I thought his death was super interesting. I liked this guy, Tobi Wong, more due to his death. He was one helluva sleepwalker. He finished art pieces and cleaned his whole house while he sleep walked, and that is FASCINATING already, right!? But he had committed suicide while sleep walking. Now, that. That gives me the shivers.

The NY Times made a limited edition newspaper scented candle in honour of his death

c) He was an asshole artist. He created stuff with objects that already existed as his mediums. He gold-plated everything cheap and made it into a luxury while he destroyed everything luxurious to make it into cheeky art. I can't deal with that; it is unethical and immoral BUT IT'S SO GENIUS so I'm really jealous. Again, I'm conflicting with myself.

The Money Pad made out of one hundred $1 bills and sold for $199.

The $20 000 Warhol print wrapped around a box....

The gold plated things...

The ring series including the Killer Ring.

Nigel having fun with the silver plated light switch.

d) Needless to say though, his pieces are pretty cool. I liked how some of them were super TRENDY but you can tell that some are timeless art and they definitely deserve love and special care.

e) The thing that Nigel said which was BANG ON about the evening (and I am not a living voice recorder so I don't remember the word-for-word quote, but it was something along the lines of...): "It's almost like it is not enough to just like his art, but we have to like him, too. I've never been to such an event where they ask for us to like the GUY making the art as much as his work." Then we kept talking to come to a conclusion that the leading and famous artists of today must be liked in 360 degrees point of view. For example, we not only like their music, but they have to be talented, beautiful, a good dancer, and also a philanthropist. Go figure.

Ponytail Days

I've been wearing my hair in a ponytail the last three days. I think I'm going to make this happen. No more buns... just ponytails all the way ! I do know that it's only me who cares about this hair change (semi-crisis) but yeah. Just sayin'

Oh and super dark make up these days. Looks scary from far away. Just an ugly picture of a normal girl, I guess. Hah, checka checka-

And here are the old&new tracks around my life. Nothing summery since summer hasn't even peeked at us yet in Vancity. RAINCOUVER to be exact... even today, I'm sitting in a cafe like a lost kid, because I have NO UMBRELLA. Someone come and pick me up.. drive me back home, pweaze. :( :(

I LIKE CHINATOWN... MANIL + PHEOBE, RESPECTIVELY.

I GOT A LITTLE SENTIMENTAL FOR YOU [KATHY], NOT DRAKE. BUT HE'S GOOD HERE. THUMBS UP-

And here's the Blackberry battery killer. I listen to this and How We Do by Mount Sims so much, I swear, it kills my cellular battery faster than WhatsApp does. #totalexaggeration. However, that's how much I listen to those songs. Maybe next post, I post How We Do, but this one's It's Not You It's Me by Coconut Records.

It's been a while
How you've come back in style
Singing hey na na na na na
Back on the block
Really nothing but talk

Singing hey na na na na na
C'mon hey na na na na na

One two three
Tell her that I just can't go on
Tell her that there's just something wrong
Tell her that I just can't go on
Uh huh Oh no

Back by demand
Do whatever you can
You look older I can tell by your hands
Drinks only gin, says it's how to keep thin
And she's crying after every meal
Lord you don't know how you're making me feel

Rrraah
Tell her that I just can't go on
Tell her that there's just something wrong
Tell her that I just can't go on
Uh huh Oh no

Six records in
Don't know where to begin
Singing na na na na na
Tell her that I just can't go on
You'll follow through it's the best you can do
Singing hey na na na na na
Tell her that I just can't go on
C'mon hey na na na na na

Tell her that I just can't go on

hey gaaaaiizzzz

Finance done. It gave me an upset stomach, a headache, sleepiness, and bad taste buds. I just want to crash, but I cannot. For I've two more finals tomorrow. Then three more to go after......... Death, ain't it ?

So to survive these few brutal days and to put me into a bit of a downer is the band, Girls. Out from SF, California, Girls debuted back in 2007 but caught most of the attention in 2009 with their first record, Album. I found them via Pitchfork way back when they were showcased on a rooftop for PitchforkTV. They sounded VERY ELVIS COSTELLO and super naive.. Maybe that's why I was never GUNG HO GIRLS !!! YEAH !!!!!

But this naivete is their key point now and I've grown to like it. Past November, 2010, they released an EP, Broken Dreams Club. The six songs on it epitomizes broken dreams and you can feel the brutal honesty. I think its climax point is their track, Substance. I've posted the lyrics below; it's pretty easy to figure out what Chris is talking about. It is beautifully sad, hazy and vain, and pointlessly hopeless. And I go back and forth and back and forth trying to figure out the paths in my life and trying to get closer to Him.

PS. Try finding them on Google. Googling "girls" is hard enough but "girls band" doesn't work and "girls California" doesn't work.. Not even "girls Chet" doesn't work !! Chet as in Chet the vice-captain of the band. Instead Google gives you the search of "girls chest" and yeah, I don't mind titties, but I don't swing that way, okay ? So yeah. It's been a journey-

PPS. The lead singer and guitarist and basically the head honcho of the band, Christopher Owens, was a past member of The Children of God cult. WOOWAOOWAWOWOAHHHHh-

and the guy on the very left with the long luscious hair, swoon-

It doesn't have to be this way / I know something / to take the corners off
and help you rock and roll / right down the road
and if you want to shape your brain / I know a substance / that gets rid of everything
and helps you rock and roll / out of control

who wants something real / when you could have nothing
why not just give up / who wants to try
let go of the wheel / turn your ass over / come on take it / it's a simple ride

i never asked to feel this way / it's something that happened / you can just go with it, man
you can rock and roll / right down the road
if you take it day by day / don't try to fight it / you can do anything, yah
you can rock and roll / out of control

who wants something real / when you could have nothing
why not just give up / who wants to try
let go of the wheel / turn your ass over / come on take it / it's a simple ride

I take the key in my hand and it opens up the day
I take the key in my hand and it takes the pain away (hey hey)
I take the key in my hand and it opens up the day
I take the key in my hand and it takes the pain away (hey hey)
I take the key in my hand and it opens up the day

But if I had love I’d throw it all away

This is their contact info that I'm going to literally TREASURE so that when I one day make a SF trip, I can hit it up !! 375 Valencia St (at 15th) SF, CA 94103 : (415) 252-0800 : M-Sat 7-8, Sun. 8-8

They do wholesale beans.. so maybe I can WHOLESALE their bean collection !???! Ahhahah, just kiddingz. That would NOT be possible. But their site also works like an online shop for beans from around the world, blends, and some merch, etc. Awesome right !? I want to try some of their beans for they make it sound like HEAVEN. I mean, take a look at their description of one from Indonesia, Sulawesi Toraja Sapan: Dried pineapple, rosewater and concord grape. Earthy body with tropical wood notes and a balanced structure. 12 oz.

moving frames

Watched yesterday, Whip It. Starring the almighty Ellen Page and Drew Barrymore. Even Jimmy Fallon and one of the burglars from HOME ALONE !!!!!!!!!!!! Teehee. Directed and co-produced by Drew Barrymore !! It's like.. HER FILM !! OMFG.
Anyhow, it was thoroughly enjoyable and laugh-out-loud entertaining. I guess since I watched it with little expectations, I ended up enjoying it aroun d9898983848326497392557 times more !! What a ride that was !
Ellen Page plays a perfect adolescent 17-year-old girl, and it's quite mind blowing that she's nearing 30. The BIG thirty, ya know !!???! And what, she's playing a SEVENTEEN-year-old. Her lips move with such intellect and each of her movement is down to her role.
Now I want to get a pair of Barbie roller skates and go roller derby-ing. VANCOUVER TOTALLY NEEDS A ROLLER DERBY WAREHOUSE. LIKE NOW. And it should be used for little girls' birthday parties and stuff.. like how ice rinks are used !!

INSTANT LOVE FOR THIS FILM. Please begin the dance party.

Moving on. I just spent some time on YouTube and guess what I found ?!!? MORE DAUL CLIPS. NEVER WATCHED BEFORE. One of them is heart-wrenching; it's about her infamous Paris apartment. The apartment. It smells so lively and it has a huge walk-in closet room and what not. Love you, Daul. RIP.

On the other hand, these ones are funny. She loves yoga !! I THINK I'LL START DOING YOGA NOW. NO KIDDINGS.

Here, she talks about her guinea pigs, Jamong (grapefruit) and Tiger. She always loved them even though they mostly lived in Seoul at her parent's place. She talks about why she likes guinea pigs over dogs, hamsters, and other pet animals. She says that they don't want too much attention. Plus, she says that guinea pigs are shy and introverted creatures that takes time to become their friend. To become one, one must converse with it and not pet nor snuggle with them excessively. This talks a lot about Daul's personality also, in my opinion. Miss you, Daul. Really, truly rest in peace.

leaving

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
don't wanna really elaborate on the topic much. Lost a good soul, a good man, indeed. Taught me lessons, showed me my nothingness and blatant failures. From the bottom of my heart, i now know how to spend my love. so just, let us put it aside. all i do now, is to look up at you. with the birds that are perched on top of capillary branches.
